50/50 Draw Proceeds to Assist Memorial Fund

Weir Rockin' was established to provide music and entertainment for our community. Due to its success, not only has the show grown to become one of the most talked-about events of the summer, but it is recognized in the music industry as a first-class event. Performers, agents and fans alike are amazed at how a group of volunteers can put on such a professional show year after year after year. Having always been a community-minded event, the latest edition to Weir Rockin' comes as no surprise.

In 2011 Sackville lost a very special friend. Claude "Tony" Lachance (1937-2011) was a gifted musician, performer, composer and arranger, but more importantly, he knew the true meaning of a gift as something that must be given away. He shared his gift of music, but what made him so special was that he gave the gift of himself, his knowledge, his spirit, his passion, his desire to see others, anyone and everyone, young and old, experience the music that was so much a part of who he was.

Claude and his family came to Lower Sackville in the late 1960's and he immediately gained a reputation as a leader in the community. In his professional life he was a member of the Stadacona Band but the music didn't stop there. In his community and the surrounding areas he directed choirs, staged musical productions, put on variety shows and specialty concerts and brought all of this music into hospitals, nursing homes and prisons as well. One of his proudest accomplishments was coordinating and directing the music, including a massed choir made up of singers from across Nova Scotia and P.E.I. along with the Stadacona Band for the visit of Pope John Paul II on the Halifax Commons in 1984. Without Claude's dedication and untiring efforts, many of our community's musical leaders might not be continuing in his tradition as they are today. Many of these people were his colleagues and/or recipients of his valuable mentoring.

To keep Claude's spirit alive, the Weir Rockin' Steering Committee has decided to establish a fund in his name. The Claude Lachance Memorial Fund for the Arts has been set up to honour and remember Claude Lachance and to help continue and further his spirit of excellence, dedication and commitment to the community. Our hope is that this fund might be used to, in some small way, enable Claude's spirit to live on in the hearts and minds of our young, up and coming, potential leaders in the arts, music, theatre, etc. This fund will seek to serve those people in the Lower, Middle and Upper Sackville community who have talent, ability and desire, but may require assistance by way of finance or equipment to achieve their goals.

Proceeds of the 50/50 draw held at Weir Rockin' 2011, coupled with a donation from the Sackville Kinsmen and others have helped to launch this new fund. A committee has recently been established and soon more information regarding the application and selection process will be available here. Proceeds from the 50/50 draw from each Weir Rockin' concert will be donated to the fund and other fundraising efforts will likely be planned to help grow the fund.
